Types of Windshield Damage

Know What You're
Dealing With.

Not all chips are the same. The type and size of the break determines whether repair or replacement is the right call. Here's what each type looks like and what it means for your windshield.

Repairable

Repairable

Star Break

Legs radiate outward from the impact point like a starburst. Usually repairable if the total diameter is under 3 inches and the break is not in the driver's direct line of sight. One of the most common chip types.

Bull's eye chip on windshield glass, tight circular impact crater
Repairable

Bull's Eye

A circular impact with a cone-shaped crater, like a target. Usually caused by a round object such as a ball bearing or stone. Clean and easy to repair if caught early before dirt and moisture work into the break.

Combination break chip on windshield glass
Repairable

Combination Break

A combination of two or more break types radiating from a single impact point, often a bull's eye with star legs or multiple leg types together. Repairable in most cases as long as the overall size stays under the dollar-bill rule.

Partial bull's eye chip on auto glass
Repairable

Partial Bull's Eye

Similar to a bull's eye but with an incomplete circle, usually because the stone hit at an angle. Can be mistaken for a simple edge chip. Repairable depending on depth and location.

Replacement Required
Edge crack on a vehicle windshield requiring replacement
Replacement Needed

Edge Crack

A crack that starts within two inches of the edge of the windshield. These are structurally more serious because windshield edges bear load during airbag deployment. Edge cracks typically require full replacement, not repair.

Long crack across windshield glass
Replacement Needed

Long Crack

Any crack longer than 6 inches. Long cracks have spread too far for resin to stabilize effectively. While some short cracks can be injected to stop further spread, a crack that has traveled more than 6 inches means replacement.

Edge chip with spreading crack on windshield glass requiring replacement
Replacement Needed

Edge Chip with Spreading Crack

An edge chip that has already propagated into a running crack along or across the glass. The combination of edge damage and active crack spread makes repair impossible. Full replacement is the only option.

How It Works

The Repair Process

Four steps. Fifteen to thirty minutes. At your home, office, or wherever your car is parked.

1

Inspect the Damage

We examine the chip size, location, depth, and type. Most chips smaller than a dollar bill that are outside the driver's direct line of sight qualify for repair. We'll tell you immediately if replacement is the better call.

2

Prepare the Surface

The damaged area is cleaned to remove any dirt, moisture, or debris that could interfere with the resin bond. Getting this step right matters. Contaminants trapped inside the chip will make the repair visible.

3

Inject Professional Resin

Resin injection uses cycles of vacuum and pressure. Vacuum draws air and debris out of the chip, creating room for the resin. Pressure then forces optical resin into every void in the glass. Professional-grade equipment, same process used industry-wide.

4

UV Cure and Polish

A UV lamp cures the resin, hardening it to near-original glass strength. The surface is polished until smooth. Additionally, most repairs are nearly invisible from normal driving position. The whole process takes 15-30 minutes.
